Gillian Lee strives to get to the summit of Mount Everest.
Gillian Lee was a mountaineer from Australia. In May 2019 Gill Lee was striving to get to the summit of Mount Everest without oxygen. He was climbing on the North side on the Tibet Route because of the human traffic jam of 200 to 300 climbers on the other route.
At 7600 m Gillian Lee started coughing constantly. Then his body shut down. His sherpas dragged him back to their tent. To warm Gill up the guides put him in a sleeping bag with lots of hot water bottles. If the guides left him up in the death zone he was going to die.
They turned a sleeping mat into a sled to get Gill down the mountain. At 6000m the sherpas met a group of Chinese rope fixers who helped them bring him down to base camp. They tied him to a yak for a 6 hour ride. From there he had a 20 minute ride to Kathmandu Hospital by helicopter.
Gill's mother raced to the hospital from Australia. Mrs Lee was VERY furious. Gillian Lees mother thought he was very selfish because he put other lives at risk.
Will he climb Everest again?
